In early May 2023, lawmakers, including Senator Alex Padilla and Representative Joaquin Castro, have introduced the Citizenship for Essential Workers Act in both the House and Senate. This legislation seeks to establish a means for over five million essential workers and their families, who played a vital role in safeguarding, feeding, and maintaining the health of Americans throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, to obtain a pathway to citizenship.
